About Dalton Hughes
Dalton Hughes’ journey as a potter is defined by mentorship and curiosity. His interest in pottery began serendipitously at a visit to the Durham Farmer’s Market in 2017 when he met Julie Olson, a renowned Durham-based ceramic and multimedia artist. Dalton had been searching for a creative outlet as a respite from the pressures of his MD/PhD program at Duke, and the meditative allure of the pottery process intrigued him. The initial lessons with Julie turned into a 4-year apprenticeship where he developed fundamental skills in making functional, everyday pieces that also serve as art. That apprenticeship was followed by an internship with esteemed potter Mark Hewitt where Dalton broadened his experience with production throwing, wood firing, and decorative techniques.
In 2022, Dalton built a studio in his backyard so he could spend more time with this hobby that had turned from a curiosity into a passion. Dalton remains passionate about sharing his love of pottery and its history with the local community around him. More than anything, he hopes to demonstrate to others how a momentary need for a creative escape amidst a time of stress can blossom into a practice that is transformative and enduring.
